Authorities in San Angelo have confirmed the tragic death of 19-year-old Isaiah Bailon, who was fatally shot Thursday evening outside the Northside Recreation Center in an incident that has led to a murder charge against a 17-year-old suspect.

According to the San Angelo Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 5:24 p.m. Upon arrival at the recreation center grounds, they discovered Bailon suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

During the course of the investigation, detectives identified 17-year-old Matthew Rodriguez as the suspect. Authorities stated that preliminary findings indicate Bailon and Rodriguez had been involved in an illegal firearm transaction shortly before the shooting occurred, which investigators believe may have contributed to the deadly encounter.

Rodriguez was taken into custody and formally charged with murder. He is currently being held at the Tom Green County Jail with bond set at $1,000,000.

The San Angelo Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is leading the case, with support from multiple specialized units, including the Gang Unit, Drone Unit, Narcotics Division, Special Operations Unit, K9 Unit, and Crime Scene Investigations.

Officials have emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to review evidence and determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
